Internet Connection

SiteKiosk assumes full control of your Internet connection in order to keep users from making changes to your settings.

Type of Connection

    Local TCP/IP network (Intranet/Router)
If you use a router or a network controller when connecting to the Internet or Intranet, or if you use programs like WINGATE/AVM-KEN, please check the box "Local TCP/IP network."

    Important:
You will have to adjust the TCP/IP settings of the network controller under Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network. If in doubt, ask your network administrator.

If the settings are available, SiteKiosk uses the proxy settings of the Internet Explorer. They are user-dependent and need to be configured for the user you want to run SiteKiosk with. Should this be the restricted SiteKiosk user you need to set this user to Unprotected with the help of the SiteKiosk System Security Manager. Then logon with that user and make the necessary changes. Now you can set the user to Protected again.

    Use dial-up networking (Modem/ISDN/DSL)
You must have installed the dial-up connection under network. If in doubt, ask your Internet provider.

    Important:
DSL connection and VPN (Virtual Private Network): Make sure to turn off the option "Disable network registration."

Since the dial-up networking for WindowsME does not work properly, you will come across problems when connecting/disconnecting. Please use a different operating system.

    No connection - Offline presentation
If you want to use your kiosk terminal simply for displaying local files stored on your hard drive, a CD-ROM or DVD, choose this option.

    Use proxy server
Enable this option if you want SiteKiosk to use specific proxy settings. You may import the IE proxy settings if desired.

Dial-Up Networking

This option is only relevant if you have decided to use a dial-up connection.
    Your connection
SiteKiosk will automatically recognize the dial-up connections you created under MY COMPUTER/DIAL-UP NETWORKING and will display them in a selection menu.

    User name/Password
If you want to log on to your provider (phone connection via modem/ISDN), you will usually need a user name and a password. In connection with 0190 (900/976; 0898/0906, etc.) numbers this password is often not required. In this case, just leave this line blank.

Do not connect on Intranet or Personal Webserver requests
If you choose this option, no connection will be established when local http:// -data is requested.

Connect on demand. Disconnect when idle for x minutes
With the help of this option you can set a certain period of idle time after which SiteKiosk will automatically disconnect you from your provider. Idle time is defined in this context as a period of time in which no mouse movements or keyboard entries occur. That is, no navigation (e.g. by the screen saver) on the Internet takes place (Caching will continue).
If the Payment Module [Plug-In] is activated, disconnection will take place automatically 12 seconds after the credit balance has gone down to zero.

    Important:
In case you are using SiteRemote with the SiteRemote 3 client option of SiteKiosk you should disable this setting. The SiteRemote 3 client will establish a permanent connection using the connection data from this configuration page.

    Disable network logon
Prevents the dialog box "logging on to network" from being displayed (especially under Win98). You should always leave this option turned on unless you establish your connection via DSL or VPN (Virtual Private Network). Turn the option off for these connection types.

Notes and tips:
  1. Since 0190 (900/976; 0898/0906, etc.) numbers (so called dialer programs) cause very high phone charges, you should think about blocking them all together. Consult your local phone company about this.
  2. Disable all protocols except IP-Header compression in the dial-up connection settings. This guarantees a quick dial-up process.
  3. If no connection can be established, first check that you can log on using the regular IE (without SiteKiosk). If you can in fact establish a connection with the IE, then verify that your username and password is correctly entered.
  4. No IE dial-up dialog box must be displayed. If you do see the dialog box, refer one more time to the section about how to establish a connection via dial-up networking.
  5. If you experience problems with a wireless connection when running SiteKiosk in autostart/shell replacement your wireless card application/driver is most likely loaded via a Windows autostart entry. You should make sure that the start is done via the run key of the Windows registry instead, as a normal Windows autostart entry is not executed when also running SiteKiosk in autostart/shell replacement mode. Open the registry (Start-> Run -> type in regedit and hit enter). Then go to hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run and make sure that the wireless card related application is added there (including parameters which might be necessary to start it in the right mode). The new entry should match the entries you already find there, choose a name you like and set the path (including potential parameters) as the value. Contact the wireless manufacturer for details concerning your specific setup.
