If you employ the SiteKiosk's Security Manager under Win2K/XP/Vista you will not have to worry about the use of the majority of applications under the SiteKiosk user account.

    Important:
Programs such as MSN Messenger are only visible as small icons in the notification area of the Windows taskbar. If you want these icons to appear also in the SiteKiosk taskbar, launch SiteKiosk in shell replacement mode!

    Note:
Some applications such as Windows Media Player (version 8 or greater), RealPlayer, Winamp, etc. ship with an integrated browser. Users might want to surf the Web using this internal browser and, thereby, circumvent SiteKiosk's security measures such as the content filter.
Instead of these applications you can use the SiteKiosk File Manager, which can display/play most of the common media file formats.

    Word processors (Winword/Wordpad/Open Office)
If you want to allow your users to use a word processing application we recommend chosing "Wordpad" (ships with every copy of Windows).

You may also use "Winword" for this purpose but please be aware that this application provides many setting options which users might take advantage of to manipulate your public access terminals. Running SK with security manager solves most of these problems.
Please take also a look at these notes..>

    Open Office
Open Office is a free suite of office applications and a popular alternative to the office products offered by Microsoft. When adding this suite to SiteKiosk as an external program, make sure to include the file soffice.bin in the Open Office directory as an indirectly opened application in addition to the .exe file of the Open Office component you want to use (last update: November 3, 2005). In doing so, you will ensure that SiteKiosk can close this application. Please take also a look at these notes..>

    File Manager (Explorer)
Since the Security Manager by default limits the functionality of the Windows file managing system ("Explorer") to a large extent, allowing the use of this program does not pose a problem. Nonetheless we strongly recommend the usage of the SiteKiosk File Manager instead of the Windows Explorer.

    Windows Messenger / MSN Messenger
Best and easiest way is to offer the Microsoft and Yahoo WEB-Messenger products to your customers. Within the SiteKiosk config tool go to "browser design", click on "customize" and activate the Web Messenger Buttons at "Messenger". That is all.

As an alternative you can use the Microsoft Messenger Applications. But this is tricky. Microsoft offers two very similar messenger applications: Windows Messenger, which ships with every copy of Windows, and MSN Messenger ("msnmsgr.exe"). If you want to use a messenger application, we recommend using Windows Messenger, as this application is much easier to control.
In contrast to MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger allows you to disable automatic launch in SiteKiosk's Security Manager. What is more, users can also relaunch Windows Messenger after it was closed, which is not possible with MSN Messenger unless SiteKiosk is launched in shell replacement mode (e.g. by selecting Autostart from the SiteKiosk Quick Start menu).

If you do want to use the MSN Messenger Application, we would like to give the following advice:

    1. Set the restricted SiteKiosk user to Unprotected using the SiteKiosk System Security Manager.
    2. Log on with the SiteKiosk user and start the Messenger.
    3. Select the entry Options under Tools, which you will find in the toolbar.
    4. Make sure to deactivate all options that automatically start and/or log on the Messenger. Usually you will find these under General and Personal (this can differ according to the Messenger version you use). These settings disallow the start of the Messenger outside the control of SiteKiosk and therefore enable for example the charging for using the application. The charge for using applications will be deducted if you entered MSN Messenger under Applications in the configuration tool and you made the use of applications subject to a charge.
    5. Log off from the SiteKiosk user and return to your administrator account.
    6. Start the SiteKiosk System Security Manager and select Protected. If you are using the Live Messenger version choose Customized before leaving the manager and make sure the folder c:\documents and settings\SiteKiosk\contacts gets read and write rights.
    7. Add Messenger to the list of allowed applications in SiteKiosk's configuration tool.
The program path is usually C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe.
    8. Start SiteKiosk and select Autostart from the Quick Start menu, this will also place the small Messenger icon in the task bar once the application has been started within SiteKiosk.

    Note:
If you are not able to start MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger within SiteKiosk, then please make sure that these applications are not checked at the SiteKiosk System Security Manager under Security Manager->Policies->Additional Applications or under Security Manager->Programs.
Also important, our notes regarding Standard Webbrowser.

    Calculator/ Calc
You can allow the use of the good old Windows Calculator "Calc" without having to worry about security issues in any way (also under Win98/ME/NT).

    Paint
The image manipulating software Paint "mspaint" (integral part of Windows) belongs to the group of applications you can allow without any second thoughts.

    mIRC
The application mIRC is a shareware program allowing users to join an endless number of chat rooms all around the world. Don't hesitate to allow the use of this program (even under Win98/ME/NT).

Games

With SiteKiosk you can also implement games as external applications. Current games/applications usually work without limitations because it is common practise that they can be used under a user with non-administrative rights.
The following list contains older games that we tested in combination with SiteKiosk.

    Notes:
We recommend playing the games with the same resolution to which you set your desktop.
Please also note that the game's directory needs to be granted read/execute rights when the game is played under a limited SiteKiosk user account. Folders to which games scores etc. can be saved may need read/write access.
As the graphics engine takes over control of the display, you may experience that SiteKiosk dialog boxes such as the notification of expiring surfing time are no longer being displayed accurately. This, however, will not affect the functionality of these dialog boxes. Click on this link to find out how you can solve the problem of a flickering taskbar.

    Battlefield 1942
    No known problems.

    Colin McRae Rally 3
    No known problems.

    Diablo 2
You will need administrator rights to play this game because otherwise the game's CD check will not work.

    Ghost Recon
    No known problems.

    Half Life
The user needs administrator rights to play the game.

    Need For Speed: Underground
    No known problems.

    Q3A
    No known problems.

    Rainbow Six Raven Shield
The taskbar may shine through. If you come this problem, open SiteKiosk's configuration tool and enable the option 'Hide window bar when application/game runs in fullscreen mode' under Browsers Design - Advanced. In addition, you will also have to release the folder 'Save' from being locked if the game is played under a limited user. Otherwise you will not get past the planning stage in this game.

    Splinter Cell
    No known problems.

    Starcraft
    No known problems.

    Unreal Tournament
You will need administrator rights to play this game because otherwise the game's CD check will not work.
If used as a charged service, the game has to be entered under Dialog Box and Windows Management because otherwise it cannot be closed after the user has run out of credit.

    Unreal Tournament 2003
    No known problems.

    Warcraft 3
    No known problems.

Filesharing Programs

We recommend to use filesharing applications that can be controled through the browser.
This applies for example to uTorrent (www.utorrent.com) and MLDonkey (www.mldonkey.org). Both can be used with the restricted SiteKiosk user without problems.
Assign read and write rights (but no execute rights) to the config, temp and incoming folders (note: folder names may vary) of the programs (use the SiteKiosk System Security Manager for the rights assignment). You can find a description of how to run and control the applications through the browser on the respective websites.
